Leading Civil Rights Group’s Full Page Ad Warns Tech Community on Trump: ‘Your Threat Model Just Changed’

‘Scrub Your Logs’

A leading civil liberties group has placed a full-page ad in the form of an open letter in WIRED magazine warning the tech community on the dangers posed by the incoming president-elect and his administration. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, “the leading nonprofit organization defending civil liberties in the digital world,” says, “Your threat model just changed,” and notes Trump has “praised attempts to undermine digital security, supported mass surveillance, and threatened net neutrality.”

It adds Trump has “promised to identify and deport millions of your friends and neighbors, track people based on their religious beliefs, and suppress freedom of the press.”

The letter urges tech companies to delete their logs: “You cannot be made to surrender data you do not have,” and take other precautions.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) also asks tech firms “to unite with us in defending Internet users.”

Boing Boing, one of the earliest blogs, created in 1988, first reported on the ad and notes that “Trump is also an avowed opponent of net neutrality.”

You can view the ad below or by visiting EFF’s page and clicking on “Read EFF’s open letter to tech companies.”
