John Glenn, Former Astronaut and Senator, Has Died

Hero, Icon Was First American to Orbit Earth

U.S. Senator John Glenn, one of America’s first astronauts and the earliest-born to orbit the Earth, has died. He was 95. Glenn, a Democrat, after his career at NASA, resigned and became a U.S. Senator, serving the people of Ohio for 24 years. He also became the oldest person to go into space, taking another trip in 1998 at the age of 77.

President Barack Obama awarded Sen. Glenn the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
