Secretary of State Petraeus? Trump May Choose Former CIA Chief Who Pleaded Guilty to Giving Classified Docs to Mistress

Former General Calls Trump a ‘Dealmaker’

Retired General David Petraeus, the former CIA director who pleaded guilty to giving classified documents to his mistress, is under consideration by Donald Trump to become Secretary of State. The Guardian, citing “diplomatic sources,” says Petraeus “has entered the race to become Donald Trump’s secretary of state.”

Of course, some on the right have claimed, falsely, Petraeus’ intentional action, a misdemeanor, was akin to Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. The actions of the two public servants are not equivalent.

“People who have seen him recently say he is anxious to return to public life and has privately refused to rule out serving in a Trump administration,” The Guardian notes, adding that Petraeus has recently been very complimentary of Trump.

“This is an individual who is a political outsider,” the former general said of the president-elect. “Perhaps he can do something in Washington that the political insiders, who he rightly criticises, have been unable to do, which is to come together to give a little, to gain a lot for our country,” he recently told German cable news channel Deutsche Welle.

“He’s right to criticise Washington over its partisanship and its inability to forge compromises,” Petraeus added. “He’s a dealmaker. Let’s see if he can make some deals in Washington.”

Also making news Thursday is Mitt Romney, who Trump is also considering for the Secretary of State role. Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani has stated publicly he wants the job. Thursday Trump met with South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, reportedly for the SoS job also. Early Trump supporter Senator Jeff Sessions, whose racist ideologies kept him off the federal bench years ago, is reportedly among the top candidates to be Secretary of State.
