North Carolina GOP Brags ‘African American Early Voting Is Down’ and ‘Caucasian Voters Early Voting Is Up’

Federal Court Ruled NC GOP’s Voter ID Targeted ‘African Americans With Almost Surgical Precision’

The North Carolina Republican Party on Monday issued a press release bragging that early voting among Blacks is down and among whites is up. This summer the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down a voter ID law passed by Tar Heel State Republicans. The court ruled North Carolina lawmakers had passed it “with racially discriminatory intent,” and added that provisions of the law “target African Americans with almost surgical precision.”

“North Carolina Obama Coalition Crumbling,” a portion of the NC GOP’s press release today states. “African American Early Voting is down 8.5% from this time in 2012,” it reads, adding, “Caucasian voters early voting is up 22.5% from this time in 2012.”

North Carolina’s News & Observer reporter Colin Campbell first reported the news via Twitter:

African American votes in other key battleground states are up over 2012, but in the Tar Heel State they have dropped.

State-wide, there are 27 fewer polling places than in 2012, a recent report by a leading civil rights group found,” NBC News reports, adding that “a decline in black turnout suggests” Republicans in North Carolina “succeeded.”
