New York City’s Trump Place Dumps Trump Name From Building

Residents Call It ‘An Empowering Way to Protest’

About 600 residents joined together to demand the Trump name be removed from New York City’s Trump Place, three high-rise apartment buildings on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

They have just won their battle, and the buildings will have the President-elect’s name taken down.

“The building is beautiful, the service is impeccable,” one resident told Bloomberg News last month. “But the name is very embarrassing. I’m embarrassed to tell people where I live. I tell them 180 Riverside Blvd.”

Another resident, one of the organizers behind the protest, on Tuesday told Bloomberg the group is “very pleased, people felt really good that they could do something.” She called it “an empowering way to protest. It wasn’t a random protest, it was a very specific protest.”

The petition, which was started just one month ago, says:

We believe that:

·      Trump’s appalling treatment of women, his history of racism, his attacks on immigrants, his mockery of the disabled, his tax avoidance, his outright lying — all are antithetical to the values we and our families believe in.

·      Many of the staff members of our building are minorities or immigrants; working in a building bearing his name is insulting to them.

·      Since Trump leases his name to buildings he does not own, part of our rent is being used to increase Trump’s net worth.
