#GOPSoWhite: Twitter Mocks House Republicans’ Selfie With Mike Pence for Lack of Diversity

115th Congress Will Be Most Racially Diverse in History – Thanks to Democrats, Obviously

Vice President-elect Mike Pence headed over to Capitol Hill to spend the morning with his former colleagues in Congress, the House Republicans, which posted a selfie the group of conservative lawmakers took to Twitter.

Twitter turned around and mocked the stunning lack of diversity, labeling it #GOPSoWhite.

Ironically, perhaps, The Hill, a news outlet that covers politics, Thursday morning posted an article, “115th Congress will be most racially diverse in history.”

That’s true, just as it was true that the 114th Congress was the most diverse in history, but that was, as Talking Points Memo reported in January of 2015, thanks largely to Democrats, not Republicans. The Washington Post, also in January of 2015, noted the 114th Congress was “80 percent white, 80 percent male and 92 percent Christian.”

So much for diversity, right?

While we don’t have a breakdown by party of the full House or Senate yet by race or other measures of diversity, once again the increasing levels of diversity in the 115th Congress will be largely thanks to Democrats, not Republicans. (See photo above.)

One Twitter user remembered the photo House Repubicans posted of their interns, which also was a study in a stunning lack of diversity:

Anothe Twitter user made the comparisons more real:

Here’s how others on Twitter weighed in on the House GOP selfie with Mike Pence:
