Melania Trump Could Have Been Deported Under Husband’s Immigration Policy

Documents Show GOP Nominee’s Wife Worked In US Illegally After Immigrating From Slovenia In 1996

During her husband’s presidential campaign, Melania Trump has cited her own story to defend his hardline immigration stance. 

The GOP nominee’s wife has maintained that she came to the US from Slovenia legally and never violated the terms of her immigration status. 

“As a young entrepreneur, I wanted to follow my dream to a place where freedom and opportunity were in abundance. So of course, I came here,” Melania Trump said in a speech this week. “Living and working in America was a true blessing, but I wanted something more. I wanted to be an American.”

However, the Associated Press has obtained documents showing that Melania Trump in fact worked illegally in the US before obtaining the necessary visa.

Melania Trump arrived in the US on a visitor visa on Aug. 27, 1996, then obtained a work visa on Oct. 18. During the seven weeks in between, she was paid $20,056 for 10 modeling jobs, the AP reports.  

“Foreigners are not allowed to use a visitor visa to work for pay in the U.S. for American companies,” the AP reports. “Doing so would violate the terms of that visa and could prohibit a foreigner from later changing his or her immigration status in the U.S. or bar the foreigner from the United States again without special permission to come back.”
