GOP Senator Says ‘High Crime or Misdemeanor,’ He Wants Clinton Impeached if She Wins

‘I’m Not a Lawyer’

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is calling for Hillary Clinton to be impeached if she wins the presidency. The freshman lawmaker who is running in a tight re-eelection race against progressive Democrat Russ Feingold says Clinton is guilty of “purposefully” circumventing the law by using a private server for her email.

Johnson, a Donald Trump supporter, characterized Clinton’s actions as “willful concealment and destruction” in an interview with a local Wisconsin newspaper, the Beloit Daily News.

“I’m not a lawyer, but this is clearly written,” Johnson says, citing two federal statutes. “I would say yes, high crime or misdemeanor, I believe she is in violation of both laws.”

The “high crimes and misdemeanors” phrase comes from the U.S. Constitution. Article II, Section 4 reads: “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

Johnson also attacked the FBI, calling its lengthy investigation into Clinton’s emails “a corrupt conclusion.”

The FBI concluded Clinton had not committed any crime and should not be charged or prosecuted.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan will spend the final four days of the election campaigning for Sen. Johnson.
