Top House GOP Leadership Urging Republicans to Give Cash to Save Majority

Houe Republicans Scramble

Top House Republican leadership Wednesday afternoon held a conference call urging fellow GOP congressmen in safe districts to hand over cash to embattled lawmakers to save the Republican majority. Politico reports leaders are scared they could lose 30 seats in the House, enough to hand the majority over to the Democrats.

Politico reports “the party faces one of the most challenging political climates in recent memory, according to sources familiar with the call.”

More than 80 lawmakers joined the call, which was organized by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 3 House Republican, and Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, the chief deputy whip, also dialed into the teleconference. They were asking for cash from lawmakers who are in safe GOP seats and can afford to relinquish the money.”

Earlier on Tuesday, former McCain presidential campaign senior strategist Steve Schmidt warned the down ballot races are dire for the GOP.

“The panic is beginning” among congressional Republicans he said on MNBC’s “Morning Joe” Wednesday morning. He predicted Hillary Clinton will win in a landslide, with 400 electoral college votes. 270 are needed to win. “All of these red states could turn blue,” Schmidt said. “All of them.”

“The magnitude of the electoral catastrophe for Republicans that is upon them just really can’t be overstated,” he added. Schmidt said Democrats will take the Senate and characterized chances of Republicans losing the House as “close.”
