Poll Shows Most GOP Voters Unfazed By Trump’s Vulgar Remarks In Video

Nearly Three In Four Think Party Leaders Should Continue To Support Republican Nominee

An overwhelming majority of Republican voters believe party leaders should continue to support Donald Trump despite his newly unearthed comments advocating sexual assault and adultery. 

The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll was conducted Saturday in the wake of The Washington Post‘s report Friday afternoon on the 2005 video, in which Trump bragged about groping women and trying to lure a married woman into an affair. Respondents were shown the video of Trump’s remarks as well as one of his subsequent apology.

Seventy-four percent of GOP voters said the party should continue to support Trump despite his comments, while only 13 percent said it shouldn’t. Only 12 percent of Republicans said Trump should end his campaign, compared to 70 percent of Democrats who think he should drop out. 

The poll found Clinton leading Trump 42-38 in a four-way race, which represents a drop of only 1 percent in support for the GOP nominee in the wake of the video. But Politico noted: “Operatives in both parties say they believe it will take several days — and Sunday night’s debate at Washington University in St. Louis — to have the video bake into the public consciousness.” 

More than two-thirds of Republican voters said they feel most men use lewd language similar to Trump’s in private, compared to 31 percent of Democrats. And 10 percent of Republicans said the video actually gave them a positive feeling.
