Pence Stands With Trump, Suggests He’ll Fix Everything At Sunday’s Debate
VP Nominee Calls Lewd Remarks On Video “Offensive,” But Won’t Resign From Ticket
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, an evangelical “family values” Christian, is standing with Donald Trump despite newly surfaced video in which the GOP presidential nominee condoned adultery and sexual assault.Â
Pence, the party’s vice presidential nominee, issued a statement Saturday saying he was “offended” by Trump’s remarks and “cannot defend them.” But Pence also reminded people that the video was from 11 years ago and suggested that Trump can fix the problem by showing “what is in his heart” during Sunday’s debate:Â

Earlier Saturday, Pence canceled a joint campaign appearance with House Speaker Paul Ryan in Wisconsin. Trump was originally scheduled to appear at the event, but Pence was tapped as a replacement after the story about the video broke.Â
Pence’s decision to cancel the appearance fueled speculation that he would resign from the ticket, especially given his conservative Christian credentials. Some GOP lawmakers who’ve withdrawn their support for Trump in the wake of the video — including the Senate’s third-ranking Republican — have also said they now support Pence to become the party’s nominee.Â
Also rallying behind Trump on Saturday was top adviser Ben Carson, whose spokesman compared Trump’s vile remarks to “rap music”:
Ben Carson still stands with Trump “100%,” Armstrong Williams tells me. Of lewd tape: “It’s no different from what you hear in rap music.”

Pence basically saying this is all on Trump at tomorrow’s debate. He couldn’t go to WI today to defend him. https://t.co/JtEMg3fVBP

A source close to Trump camp told me Pence and his team are “absolutely apoplectic,†“melting down†and “inconsolable.â€

#MikePence “cannot defend” #DonaldTrump. “I look forward to… tomorrow night” might be understatement of this #USelection cycle #debate pic.twitter.com/PldEhNQt5E

Save us, Mike Pence! This man is utterly horrible and only you – WHO HAVE BEEN VOUCHING AND CAMPAIGNING FOR HIM FOR MONTHS – can redeem us!

This is the statement that will stick with Pence for his career.

Pence statement essentially says Trump has chance to show “his heart” at debate tomorrow, appears to leave door open for himself.
