Breaking: Supreme Court Accepts Case Involving Virginia Transgender High School Student Gavin Grimm

School Board Refuses to Allow Teenaged High School Boy Who Is Transgender to Use Boys’ Facilities

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case involving a transgender high school student who is suing his local school board over their refusal to allow him to use the boys’ restroom. Gavin Grimm, now a senior at Gloucester High School, sued the Glouchester County School Board, and in June won a major victory at the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. But the school board appealed and petitioned the Supreme Court to stay a ruling that allowed Grimm to use the boys’ facilities, and to review the case. The high court placed the decision on hold and Friday afternoon agreed to review the case.

Central to the case are the Obama administration’s guidelines that urged school districts to treat all transgender students equally, including allowing them to use restrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity.

“The question in Grimm’s case raises the question whether — as the ACLU and the Obama administration assert — the school’s policy violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972,” Chris Geidner at Buzzfeed adds. “The Obama administration has interpreted the sex discrimination ban in Title IX to include a ban on anti-transgender discrimination.”
