Trump Goes Off on GOP Senator Who Said He Won’t Vote for Nominee

Arizona’s Jeff Flake Suggested He’ll Write In A Candidate

Once again demonstrating his complete lack of presidential restraint, Donald Trump unleashed Sunday on a GOP senator who said earlier in the day that he won’t vote for the party’s nominee. 

“The Republican Party needs strong and committed leaders, not weak people such as @JeffFlake, if it is going to stop illegal immigration,” Trump wrote. “The Great State of Arizona, where I just had a massive rally (amazing people), has a very weak and ineffective Senator, Jeff Flake. Sad!”

Earlier Sunday, Flake suggested he would write in a candidate rather than voting for Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton. 

“I would not vote for [Democratic nominee] Hillary Clinton — and as of now, I would not vote for Donald Trump,” Flake said on CNN’s State of the Union. “You can always write someone in. I just know that I would like to vote for Donald Trump. It’s not comfortable to not support your nominee. But given the positions that he’s taken and the tone and tenor of his campaign, I simply can’t.”

Flake added that he thinks Clinton could win Arizona because of Trump’s hardline stance on immigration. 

“Arizona should still be a red state. But Donald Trump, with the rhetoric that he’s under and the characterizations of, you know, many of the state’s population, have put the state in play,” he said. “And unfortunately, you know, that leads to Democrats spending a lot of money here, unfortunately for Republicans.”

Earlier this year, Flake confronted Trump during a meeting on Capitol Hill, asking him to stop attacking Mexicans. Trump embarrassingly responded by predicting Flake would lose his re-election bid — even though he’s not on the ballot until 2018.
