Right Wingers Explode Over Clinton Calling ‘Half of Trump’s Supporters’ a ‘Basket of Deplorables’
The Anti-PC Crowd All of a Sudden Wants Clinton to be Politically Correct
Far right Republicans overnight grew increasingly incensed after Hillary Clinton shared her feelings about the extremists supporting Donald Trump with donors at an LGBT for Hillary fundraiser event that featured Barbra Streisand.
“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables’. Right?,†Clinton told her supporters at the Manhattan event. The Washington Post reports her comments received “applause and laughter from the crowd.”
“The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it,†Clinton specified. “And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.â€
Clinton added that Trump has “given voice†to white supremacist and anti-Semitic voices online, according to the Post’s report.
“He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric,†the former secretary of state added. “Now, some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.â€
Clinton also gave equal time to those she said are “people we have to understand and empathize with.”
“That other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change,†Clinton continued. “It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different.â€
On social media, right wingers felt the need to defend Trump’s racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, or Islamophobic supporters, and the hashtag #BasketOfDeplorables took hold.
Right wing pundit Hugh Hewitt tried to compare Clinton’s remarks to Romney’s “47%” comments:
If u weren’t paying attention last night t’was @rubycramer who 1st posted this cycle’s “47%” w/ #basketofdeplorables https://t.co/cisMbZsUYr
— Hugh Hewitt (@hughhewitt) September 10, 2016
And gave Trump more advice:
4 @realDonaldTrump: Every speech should start “So, which half of you are in the #basketofdeplorables?” In every TV hit you should reference.
— Hugh Hewitt (@hughhewitt) September 10, 2016
Right wing Pollster Frank Luntz tried to tie Clinton’s remarks to Romney’s too:
Hillary Clinton just insulted millions of hard-working Americans simply because they don’t want to vote for her.https://t.co/utnuAkvdcJ
— Frank Luntz (@FrankLuntz) September 10, 2016
RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer was only too happy to lie once again about Clinton’s comments:
Heads up Americans: if you support @realDonaldTrump @HillaryClinton thinks you are “deplorable”
— Sean Spicer (@seanspicer) September 10, 2016
Trump jumped in, of course:
Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of amazing, hard working people. I think it will cost her at the Polls!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 10, 2016
A Breitbart writer:Â
Hillary sounded over-medicated, a little stoned when she wrote off 35 million Americans as DEPLORABLE.
Wow. What a disaster.

Anti-LGBT Christian extremist:
Hillary: Millions of Americans are “deplorables.” Bill mocks “coal people.” Obama: Americans are “lazy.” Left holds own nation in contempt.
— Janet Mefferd (@JanetMefferd) September 10, 2016
But voices on the left continued to hold the offended’s feet to the fire:
I agree “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic” people are deplorable. What reasonable person wouldn’t? #basketofdeplorables

#BasketOfDeplorables even @soledadobrien was just on CNN saying the media has normalized white supremacy. So let’s not act brand new now ppl

Seems like Hillary had a point. #BasketofDeplorables https://t.co/U4DdLx6ak6

That moment when your campaign against #PoliticalCorrectness collapses into cry-baby whining because mean Hillary said #BasketOfDeplorables
— The Daily Edge (@TheDailyEdge) September 10, 2016
She insulted the “racist, sexist, homophobic or xenophobic.” The real question: Why don’t YOU? #BasketOfDeplorables https://t.co/zlfZB2s99E

“Build the wall! F*ck those dirty beaners!”
Definitely some “economic anxieties” there. #BasketOfDeplorableshttps://t.co/lcLTqK95iM

#BasketOfDeplorables Eagerly awaiting someone attempting to explain why being racist, bigoted, xenophobic is not deplorable 🙂

You still want to vote for this man after this you belong in the #BasketOfDeplorables pic.twitter.com/XSNicZ0hrG
— Gregory (@highontroyhill) September 10, 2016
But no, I get it. #BasketOfDeplorables is clearly the most toxic line of the campaign cycle. Way worse than, say, calling Mexicans rapists.
