Threaten ‘Appropriate Measures’ After #NoBillNoBreak
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says his fellow Republicans are readying to punish House Democrats for the sit-in they waged in June to advance gun control. Democrats were demanding Republicans allow gun control bills to come to the floor for a vote – nothing more, just allow gun control bills to get a vote.
“I think you will see appropriate measures taken in the very near future,” Rep. McCarthy (photo, right) said, according to New York Times reporter Emmarie Huetteman.Â
“Are you going to let the House stand with that behavior going forward?†McCarthy added, according to Buzzfeed. “I think it would create real damage to the reputation of the House in the long term.â€
“The investigation is coming to an end and I think the appropriate judgment will come forward,†McCarthy insisted.
Last week Politico had reported that as soon as Republicans returned from their 7-week vacation after Labor Day they would try to make the Democrats pay for shutting down the congress.
“The exact language is still in flux, and multiple sources said discussions are ongoing,” Politico had reported. “But Speaker Paul Ryan’s office and other leadership staff have been researching ways they can punish Democrats for their controversial occupation of the House floor to protest the chamber’s lack of response to the Orlando, Florida, shooting massacre.”
Back in June Speaker Paul Ryan in June had suggested Republicans needed to “bring order to this chaos.”
“This is the people’s House,” Ryan said, ignoring that nine out of ten Americans want stronger gun control. “This is Congress, the House of Representatives, oldest democracy in the world, and they’re descending it into chaos. I don’t think this should be a very proud moment for democracy or for the people who staged these stunts.”Â
