Six Points When Four Candidates Included
Hillary Clinton is beating Donald Trump by six points in the first major poll taken since she announced she had been diagnosed with pneumonia. The Democratic presidential nominee leads her Republican opponent by seven points, 48-41, and by six points when Gary Johnson and Jill Stein are included.
In the four-way race, Clinton leads with 43 percent, Trump comes in second with 37 percent, and Johnson now takes 9 percent. Stein remains consistent at 3 percent.Â
The poll was conducted Sept. 16-19 for NBC News/Wall Street Journal by Democratic pollster Fred Yang of Hart Research Associates, and Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.
“Despite arguably the worst few weeks of her candidacy, the fundamentals still point toward a Hillary Clinton victory,” Yang says.Â
“Donald Trump has closed the margin since August, but as we head towards the debate, still needs to push this campaign closer. The good news for him is the electorate narrowly agrees with him that America has lost ground and wants to see a change in direction,” McInturff adds.
Clinton is winning among those with a college degree, 49-43. Those without a college degree choose Trump, 53-35.
Of note, more voters who choose Clinton do so because they want her to be president, while more voters who choose Trump are doing so as a protest against the Democratic nominee.
