Congressional Black Caucus PAC Blasts Trump as Unelectable After Not Apologizing for His Birtherism

Top Congressional Leaders Say Issue Bigger Than Election

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus PAC gathered Friday afternoon to blast Donald Trump for his years of advocating for the birther issue, and for not apologizing after admitting Friday morning that President Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen.

“We’re not going to take it anymore. We will not elect a chief bigot of the United States of America,” Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) told reporters. Calling his actions “the lowest level of electioneering,” she accused Trump of having “debased the presidential contest.”

“He could have ended this in a calm and respectful manner, after he started these lies yesterday at The Washington Post,” she insisted, referring to the article in which Trump refused to answer if he believed Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen.

“He could have taken the quiet time to apologize,” she added, noting he did not “because he has lived a life of bigotry.”

“If you view America as a land of value and equality, and justice, this man cannot be elected,” Rep. Jackson-Lee added.

“This issue is bigger than the politicians, election and the press. We’re really talking about survival of United States,” Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) told reporters. “It’s not a Black question, it’s an American issue.”

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) said Trump’s campaign was built on the birther movement.

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) called Trump’s actions “a dogwhistle to African-Americans, indeed to all Americans.”

“It’s about degrading the America dream.”

“Donald Trump created the birther issue long before he became a candidate,” Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) said. “He knew exactly what he was doing.”
