One Term Pat? North Carolina GOP Gov. McCrory Now Losing by 9 Points in Latest Poll

7 Out of 10 Say McCrory’s HB2 Has Harmed the State

Pat McCrory‘s first term as North Carolina’s governor may be his last. The latest Monmouth poll shows the Republican politician who has served in various elected offices since 1989 losing to his Democratic challenger by 9 points. 

“Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper holds a significant 52% to 43% lead over incumbent Pat McCrory,” Monmouth announced Wednesday afternoon. 

“A majority of voters (55%) disapprove of HB2 compared to fewer than 4-in-10 (36%) who approve of HB2.  Among voters who approve of the law, 74% are backing McCrory in the governor’s race.  Among those who disapprove of it, 72% are voting for Cooper.”

70 percent of North Carolina voters say HB2 has hurt the state’s reputation across the county. 

“Even among those who approve of the law itself, 41% say HB2 has been bad for the state’s reputation,” Monmouth finds.

The poll also puts Hillary Clinton ahead of Donald Trump in the Tar Heel State, but only by 2 points, 44% to 42%.

HB2 is the extremist anti-LGBT law that has been called unconstitutional by many legal experts, is largely to blame. McCrory vowed to take action against the City of Charlotte, which he served as mayor from 1995 to 2009, for its nondiscrimination law, even before it had passed. HB2 dissolved that and similar laws across the state, and cost taxpayers millions in revenue and an untold number of jobs, likely in the thousands.
