Judicial Panel Rules Case Calling for Removal of Judge Roy Moore Will Proceed to Trial

Anti-Gay Alabama Chief Justice Will Face Trial-Like Proceeding Next Month

Chief Justice Roy Moore will face a trial-like proceeding September 28 during which the Court of the Judiciary will hear arguments as to why and why not the head of the Alabama Supreme Court, now under suspension, should retain his job or be removed from it. The Alabama Court of the Judiciary earlier Monday heard arguments in the case and has just-now handed down its decision.

Moore in January issued a directive falsely stating Alabama’s ban on same-sex marriage was still in effect, telling the state’s probate judges they should not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, despite a federal court and the Supreme Court having ruled same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry.

The Court of the Judiciary disagreed with Moore’s argument that the case against him should be dismissed, but also disagreed with the Judicial Inquiry’s Commission’s request to immediately remove Moore from office.
