Trump’s $100K Gift to Anti-Gay Leader Among Few Charitable Donations He’s Made

Clintons Have Given Six Times More Than Trump to Charity Since 2001

Bill and Hillary Clinton gave $23.2 million to charity between 2001 and 2015, or roughly 10 percent of their adjusted gross income.

Donald Trump gave just $3.9 million to charity during the same period, The Washington Post reports.

It’s unclear what percentage of Trump’s income that figure represents, because he hasn’t released his tax returns, but he claims to be worth more than $10 billion. If one were to assume that Trump has earned only $1 billion of his alleged net worth since 2001, his charitable donations would be less than 0.4 percent for that period.

The bulk of Trump’s charitable donations have come over the last few months, during his presidential campaign, the Post reports. The most recent was $100,000 to the Louisiana church pastored by Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, an anti-LGBT hate group. (The New Civil Rights Movement was first to report this donation last week.)

Trump chose to give the money to Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, even though Gov. John Bel Edwards encouraged him to instead donate to the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s Louisiana Flood Relief Fund.

In addition to being pastored by Perkins, the church requires its employees and volunteers to sign a virulently anti-gay Statement of Marriage and Family. However, Perkins insists the money from Trump will go entirely to flood relief efforts.

“The funds will not be used for normal church expenses, nor will the funds be used for cash grants to individuals,” Perkins said.
