Christian Homeschoolers’ Science Textbook Teaches Kids That God Made the Oceans

Curriculum Utilizes ‘Scientific Method’ of Filling in the Blank

The very definition of science is “knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation.”

Hemant Mehta at Friendly Atheist has examined what he believes may be the “worst science textbook ever,” crediting a book for second grade Christian homeschoolers published by a company called Accelerated Christian Education. Their program presents potential consumers with “God’s Mandate for Christian Education,” which reads, “Christian education is not an alternative. It is not a luxury. It is not even just a good idea. It is the law of God. It is the law that He gave to our forefathers, and it is the same law that He now gives to us. It is the GREAT COMMANDMENT.”

The book, a page of which is seen above, tasks children with the “scientific method” of filling in the blank – and teaching children that regardless of the answer, “God made” it.

Accelerated Christian Education advises that consumers “may be thinking, ‘Yes, it is good to teach children about God and the Bible, but this is a bit too much. I do not want people to think I am a fanatic or something,’” before cautioning that they “stop and realize the current plight of our nation’s children and the dire straight of our public educational system.”

The National Center for Education Statistics currently reports promising data concerning long-term public education. In its last report, it reads that “dropout [rates] decreased from 12.1 percent in 1990 to 6.5 percent in 2014, with most of the decline occurring since 2000.”

According to PBS, it’s in the second grade that students begin to develop their analytical abilities. In the field of science, “second graders will be asked to use what they know to make predictions and find patterns in the natural world. They learn about the Earth and its natural resources, and how people use these resources to get energy. They look at how the Earth changes over time and how we learn about the history of the Earth through fossils.”

Accelerated Christian Education’s official curriculum on science, which utilizes this science textbook and others like it, currently advises that “no transitional fossils have been or will ever be discovered because God created each type of fish, amphibian, and reptile as separate, unique animals. Any similarities that exist among them are due to the fact that one Master Craftsman fashioned them all.”

The program’s official stance on if rivers and lakes are composed of water and not the word “wear” is unknown, but many children will be taught regardless, it was made by God.
