Anti-Gay Hate Group Leader Tony Perkins Unsure Why God Destroyed His Home

FRC President Escapes in Canoe as ‘Flood of Biblical Proportions’ Strikes Louisiana

It’s not uncommon for anti-gay leaders to chalk up natural disasters as God’s wrath against LGBT people.

But whom do they blame when a natural disaster (or God) destroys the home of an anti-gay hate group leader?

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said Wednesday that both his home and the local church he pastors were heavily damaged in what he called “the flood of biblical proportions” that struck Louisiana over the weekend. He posted this photo on Facebook:

But Perkins, who once blamed the Boston marathon bombing on “sexual liberalism” in Massachusetts, is still trying to figure out why God targeted him and his family.

“We’re gonna look for what God’s gonna do in this,” Perkins told FRC’s Washington Watch radio show. “I’m asking those questions and I’m going to see.”

Perkins — who’s also declared that natural disasters are acts of God, not consequences of climate change — said his family of seven escaped in a canoe when the water became 10-feet high in their driveway. After being turned away from one shelter, they were taken in for the night by a former member of their church — “in God’s provision.”

The next day, Perkins and his family were able to return to their property, and they’re now living in their motor home. Unlike most other Louisiana residents affected by the flooding, Perkins said crews are already working to repair his house.

Perkins, who was on vacation when the flood hit, is currently serving as interim pastor at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church. He said the flood damaged the church and has affected 80 percent of its members.

Perkins asked people to pray that he can return quickly to Washington Watch, which he normally hosts.

Former FRC Vice President Ken Klukowski, who was hosting Wednesday’s show and now works for Breitbart News, told Perkins the flood is “an incredible, encouraging spiritual exercise to take you to the next level in your walk with an almighty and gracious God who does all things well.”
