Racist Republican Congressman on Live TV Suggests White People Have Contributed More to Civilization Than Anyone Else
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is perhaps best known to Americans as the man who claimed during the 2014 protests in Ferguson that all the protestors “appear to be of a single, you know, of a single origin, I should say, a continental origin,” suggesting they were all African-American, which was false. One year earlier, King drew national derision when he said that for every undocumented immigrant in America who’s a “valedictorian,” there are 100 who are running drugs across the Mexican border — and they have “calves the size of cantaloupes.”
Speaking on MSNBC Monday afternoon in a panel discussion, Rep. King, a strong and early supporter of Donald Trump, suggested that white people have made more and/or greater contributions to civilization than non-white people.
Esquire’s Charles Pierce, a frequent and well-respected commentator, noted that the reign of whites across America, especially across the GOP, was drawing to a close as the nation becomes increasingly diverse.
“If you’re really optimistic, you can say that this is the last time that old white people will command the Republican party’s attention, its platform, its public face,” Pierce told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, as The Washington Post noted. “That hall is wired by loud, unhappy, dissatisfied white people.”
King was not pleased.
“This ‘old white people’ business does get a little tired, Charlie,” Rep. King responded. “I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you’re talking about, where did any other sub-group of people contribute more to civilization?”
“Than white people?” a shocked and stunned Hayes, who is 37 and headlines MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes,” inquired.
“Than, than Western civilization itself,” King responded. “It’s rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States of America and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That’s all of Western civilization.”
After some input from other panelists, in his usual form Hayes refused to let King’s comment go without refutation.
“We’re not going to argue the history of Western civilization,” Hayes concluded. “Let me note for the record that if you’re looking at the ledger of Western civilization, for every flourishing democracy, you have Hitler and Stalin as well.”
It did not take long for “Steve King” to trend on Twitter, which erupted in anger at King’s remarks:
