GOP Platform: Porn Is ‘A Public Health Crisis That Is Destroying the Life of Millions’

No Mention of the 33,000 Gun Deaths Each Year or the Thousands Infected With Zika

When it comes to public health crises today’s Republicans apparently got their training at a Bible Academy. The final draft version of the 2016 Republican platform calls pornography “a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions.” (It’s also clear their grammar certificate came from a similarly non-certified source.)

Republican Committeemen (and women) spent two full days arguing over the tiniest of details but managed to create the most anti-LGBT platform in history. They also ignored anything to do with common sense, preferring to focus on their base.

“The internet must not become a safe haven for predators,” the provision states, according to Mother Jones and CNN, which notes the “amendment passed with little debate.”

“Pornography, with its harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions. We encourage states to continue to fight this public menace and pledge our commitment to children’s safety and well-being. We applaud the social networking sites that bar sex offenders from participation. We urge energetic prosecution of child pornography which closely linked to human trafficking.”

Unmentioned in the draft platform are the nearly 33,000 deaths each year from guns, or the thousands currently infected with the dangerous Zika virus, or the fact that Republicans in Congress have refused to allocate funds to fight it.

(Zika has been called “much more insidious, cunning and evil” than Ebola, but even before Ebola came to America, Republicans vowed to do everything possible, including one New Jersey governor who wrongly detained an asymptomatic nurse.)

Another health crisis that the Republicans have not only chosen to ignore, but lie about: climate change, and, specifically, coal.

“After a unanimous vote on Monday, the RNC’s draft platform officially declares coal ‘an abundant, clean, affordable, reliable domestic energy resource,'” Grist reports, adding that the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) calls coal “an affordable, abundant and increasingly clean domestic energy resource that is vital to providing reliable low-cost electricity.”

Greenpeace notes that “coal fired power plants are the biggest source of man made CO2 emissions. This makes coal energy the single greatest threat facing our climate.”
