Bernie Sanders Will Not Nominate Hillary Clinton

Some Sanders Delegates Still Holding Out Hope

Unlike in 2008, the Democratic runner-up will not nominate the presumptive nominee at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Bernie Sanders Tuesday will not personally nominate Hillary Clinton to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, but his home state’s delegation, Vermont, will.

The Vermont delegation will ask to be polled last at the 4 PM Roll Call of States, and then will nominate Hillary Clinton by unanimous consent, NBC News reports. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, the longest serving woman in Congress, will officially introduce Secretary Hillary Clinton’s name before the roll call vote. Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis will second the nomination.

Sanders on Tuesday was still trying to get as many delegate votes as possible. Clinton needs 2,382 total delegates to clinch the nomination.

“So tonight for those of you who are supporters, you’re going to have a roll call vote, and I very much look forward to and appreciate your support. Let’s get the 1,900,” Sanders told California delegates Tuesday morning, ABC 7 reports, adding that Sanders “acknowledges that he does not have enough support to prevent Hillary Clinton from being formally nominated by the Democratic Party for president.”
