Bernie Sanders Sends Text to Supporters Asking ‘To Not Engage in Any Kind of Protest on the Floor’

#BernieOrBust Earlier Booed Bernie

After Bernie Sanders supporters protested at the opening of the Democratic National Convention Monday afternoon, Senator Sanders took the unprecedented action of sending a text to supporters asking them to stop protesting on the floor of the Convention.

“I ask you as a personal courtesy to me to not engage in any kind of protest on the floor,” Sen. Sanders wrote, Yahoo News reports, in the text message to his delegate whips. “Its [sic] of utmost importance you explain this to your delegations.”

The text was signed, “Bernie.”

After the Convention was gaveled in, supporters of Bernie Sanders chanted “Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!” as Convention Chair Marcia Fudge attempted to address delegates.

“May I just make a point,” Rep. Fudge was forced to say at the end of her remarks, as Talking Points Memo notes. “There are many of you that do not know me in this room, but let me say to you, I intend to be fair, I want to hear the varying opinions here. I am going to be respectful of you and I want you to be respectful of me.”

Sanders was forced to follow up the text with an email to all delegates asking them to refrain from “booing, turning of backs, walking out.”
