At This Week’s DNC Sarah McBride Will Become First Openly-Transgender Speaker to Address Major Party

Trans Rights Activist Known for Major Role in Passing Delaware’s Gender Identity Nondiscrimination Act

In 2013 Sarah McBride was just 22 yet she played a major role in the passage of Delaware’s Gender Identity Nondiscrimination Act. “Her tireless advocacy for passage of this legislation has made a real difference for all transgender people in Delaware,” Governor Jack Markell said at the bill’s signing ceremony.

This week at the Democratic National Convention McBride will become the first openly transgender person to address a major party.

McBride is the National Press Secretary of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, serving previously at the Center for American Progress and Equality Delaware.

On Facebook, announcing the event, McBride graciously writes, “I hope I do folks proud! Huge gratitude to the Congressional LGBT Caucus for inviting me to join them on stage!”

Her Facebook page is loaded with photos taken of her with national leaders like Vice President Joe Biden, or celebrities like Jeffrey Tambor, or speaking at events like panels at the Department of Housing and Urban development on youth and workplace bullying, and a handwritten letter from Senator Sherrod Brown.
