Philly Hate Attacker Kathryn Knott’s Early Release Request Refused

Attorney Will Try Again Next Month

Kathryn Knott‘s request for early release has been denied. Common Pleas Court Judge Roxanne Covington, without explanation or comment, refused the request from Knott’s attorney last week. Knott was convicted in the September 11, 2014 attack on a same-sex couple in downtown Philadelphia, and sentenced to five to ten months. She had just entered month four of her sentence.

“She’s had no write-ups, which you can get if you’re in a fight, or insolent or insubordinate or don’t follow directions,” Knott’s attorney William Brennan told Philadelphia Gay News. “She’s been performing her duties — cleaning toilets — and has been a model inmate. Inmates are given this reward, if you will, where the minimum sentence is slightly reduced and they have the opportunity to be released slightly early with ‘earned time, good time.'”

Brennan says he will try again for early release as she enters her fifth month, on July 8.

“It’s really the norm for someone who has behaved themselves to be released at the minimum. That’s the way the system is designed to work,” Brennan told PGN. “I’m cautiously optimistic that she will not be singled out for any reason because it really is the norm that, if you’ve behaved yourself, you are eligible for release at the minimum.”

Her attorney had tried back in February to have her sentence converted from jail time to recording a public service announcement. The judge denied that request also. Knott was convicted of simple assault, conspiracy and reckless endangerment.

Once she is out of jail two civil lawsuits await her, including a $500,000 suit from the couple she was convicted of attacking.
