Today Is Last Day of Session
The Kansas State Supreme Court has ruled that Gov. Sam Brownback and Kansas lawmakers have not only drastically but illegally underfunded public schools, and have given them until June 30 to fix the problem. They have yet to act. Today is the last day of the legislative session until next year.
Instead of funding public schools, which, the court warned, will not be able to open in August as a result, Kansas Republican Senate President Susan Wagle has decided that today the Senate will devote its time to debating and voting on a non-binding resolution that officially condemns President Barack Obama for his administration’s guidelines on not discriminating against transgender students.
“It’s important for the Kansas Senate to take a stand against the Obama administration’s overreach and misinterpretation of Title IX,” Sen. Wagle says. “Our resolution urges the state to join the multi-state lawsuit filed yesterday and calls on Congress to reign in this ridiculous federal demand. Kansas students should have privacy rights.”
The resolution also urges the state attorney general to join Texas and other states in suing the Obama administration over its guidance on transgender students sent to school districts. That lawsuit is illegal.
“Republican legislators have once again failed to comply with their constitutional duty to fairly fund our schools,” Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, a Democrat from Topeka, said. “If they truly concerned about keeping schools open in August, they should use the Sine Die (last day) session to appropriate $38 million for school funding equity rather than waste taxpayers’ dollars on an election year charade over which bathroom students can use.”
