Democratic Frontrunner Moving Closer to Having Enough Total Delegates to Clinch Nomination
Hillary Clinton is the winner of the Democratic primary in Puerto Rico, according to NBC, CNN, and the AP. There are a total of 67 delegates at stake. Seven are superdelegates. All seven as of Sunday morning have all now committed to Clinton.
The former Secretary of State on Saturday won the U.S. Virgin Islands Democratic caucuses in a landslide, scooping up all 11 delegates as Senator Bernie Sanders fell short of the 15% threshold, the AP reports.
Clinton, according to the AP, going into Sunday’s Puerto Rico contest had 1776 delegates, not including superdelegates. She or Senator Bernie Sanders need 2383 to win the Democratic nomination for president. The AP also reports that with superdelegates, not including Puerto Rico’s results, Clinton needed only 60 delegates “to advance to the November general election.”
There was little polling done in Puerto Rico, but a small poll released days ago gave Clinton a whopping lead over Sanders, 63.9% to 30.1%. Clinton won Puerto Rico over then-Senator Barack Obama in 2008.
The Sanders campaign has denounced the lack of polling sites, which have been cut by more than two-thirds, and accused the local Democratic Party of fraud.
On Saturday, Sen. Sanders told reporters that regardless of the outcomes in any of the remaining states, “The Democratic National Convention will be a contested convention.”
