Hardware Store Owner With ‘No Gays Allowed’ Sign Erects Outhouse as ‘Transgender Bathroom’

Owner of Amyx Hardware in Tennessee Says God Hates LGBT People

The Tennessee hardware store owner who banned “the homosexual people” and posted a “No Gays Allowed” sign at his business last year recently constructed an outhouse that he’s calling a “Transgender Bathroom.”

Jeff Amyx, owner of Amyx Hardware and Roofing Supplies in Washburn, Tennessee, told Grainger Today (subscription required) that he constructed the outhouse in response to President Barack Obama’s recent guidance requiring public schools to allow trans students to use restrooms based on their gender identity.

Below a sign on the outhouse reading, “Transgender Bathroom,” is another one stating, “Out of Service Indefinitely.”

“We still have freedom of speech in this country,” Amyx told Grainger Today. “Obama is trying to push this down everybody’s throat. But I just want the world to know — everybody to know — that you don’t have to accept it. They can enforce all the laws they want but getting us to comply with it is going to be a different story.”

Referring to the outhouse, Amyx told the newspaper: “I’m just in compliance with Obama law. He didn’t say where you had to build it or if it had to work. … If Obama wants to have a transgender bathroom at the White House, have at it. But don’t tell me I have to have one. And don’t tell me I have to accept their lifestyle. Obama can make all the laws he wants, but God’s law trumps his law.”

(It’s worth noting that, contrary to Amyx’s apparent interpretation, Obama’s guidance specifically states that schools cannot force trans students to use special restrooms such as the one he’s constructed.)

Amyx posted the “No Gays Allowed” sign in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of same-sex marriage last year. The store also sells hats saying “No Gays Allowed” and “Choose God or Gays.”

According to photographs published by Grainger Today, Amyx Hardware displays banners featuring Bible verses below its marquee and on a fence outside the business.

The banner below the marquee states, “God destroyed the sodomites for an example,” while the one attached to the fence states, “GOD Hates ALL Workers of Iniquity. I hate them, O Lord, that hate Thee. I found them mine enemies.”

Amyx elaborated on the latter verse for the story about the outhouse, in which he blamed churches for accepting LGBT people.

“You know what a worker of iniquity is? It’s a lifestyle of wickedness,” he said. “God hates ‘em, Jesus can’t save ’em, but church people are loving ’em. Does that make any sense?”
