Watch: Trump Fails Miserably at Telling Jimmy Kimmel His Position on Transgender People in Bathrooms

Even Kimmel and His Audience Can’t Help but Laugh at the GOP Presumptive Nominee

Donald Trump offered two answers to Jimmy Kimmel’s question about which restroom he thinks transgender people should use. That’s one less than he has been offering, so perhaps he’ll reach a position before the November election.

Trump famously a few weeks ago had invited Caitlyn Jenner to Trump Tower to use any restroom she liked, and has said that transgender people must be protected, suggesting he believes they, like Jenner, should be free to use public accommodations that correspond with their gender identity.

But the presumptive Republican nominee offered such an embarrassing answer to a simple question that the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host ended up laughing, along with the audience.

Saying he thought Trump’s earlier responses were “very interesting,” Kimmel got a surprising answer.

“What I’m saying, and I think it’s pretty simple, let the states decide,” Trump offered, adding, “we have to protect everybody,” which, of course, means that in most states, transgender people would not be protected.

“If you were voting personally as a member in New York state that you would vote for that right?,” Kimmel rephrased his question.

“Well the party generally believes that whatever you’re born that’s the bathroom you use,” Trump, who almost never has cared about the Republican party’s position on anything, responded.

“But what about you?,” Kimmel pressed.

“Me? I say let the states decide,” Trump said, copping out.

“Do you personally support it? I think you do,” Kimmel again asked.

“What I support is let the states decide and I think the states will do, hopefully, the right thing,” Trump continued to dart.

“And what’s the right thing?,” Kimmel pressed.

“I don’t know yet, I mean, I don’t know, honestly, I don’t know,” Trump admitted, to a hysterical audience.

“It’s the stupidest thing to be focused on…,” Kimmel continued, interrupted.

“The world is blowing apart. Lots of bad things are happening. You know what? It’s something that has to be discussed, but I say, let the states decide,” Trump, clearly unwilling to form a cohesive answer, again offered.

“Alright, I’ll give you an N/A on that one,” Kimmel concluded.
