Watch: McCrory Admits Transgender Protections Have Never Been Used to Commit Crimes in Bathrooms

GOP Governor Cornered on Fox News

Governor Pat McCrory on Sunday was forced to admit transgender protection laws have never been used to commit crimes in North Carolina restrooms.

The conservative Republican is under nationwide fire for signing HB2, an anti-LGBT law that has cost the state at least hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of jobs. On “Fox News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace asked the governor, “How many cases have you had in North Carolina in the last year where people have been convicted of using transgender protections to commit crimes in bathrooms?”

McCrory acknowledged this “wasn’t a problem,” but then tried to turn nondiscrimination laws into a partisan issue.

“This is the Democratic Party and the left wing of the Democratic Party,” he began.

“But have there been any cases of this?,” Wallace continued.

“Not that I’m aware of,” McCrory admitted.

“I guess the question is,” Wallace then asked, “forgive me, if I may, sir, why not just then let it go? If there’s not a case of transgender people going in and molesting little girls?”

“I haven’t used that at all,” McCrory claimed. “This is an issue of expectation…”

“Well, you did say a boy who thinks he’s a girl going into a girls’ bathroom,” Wallace pointed out.

“And that’s where there’s an expectation of privacy,” McCrory continued. “When you go into a restroom, or your wife goes into a restroom you assume the only other people going into that restroom or shower facility is going to be a person of the same gender. That’s been an expectation of privacy that all of us have for years.”

“But if there’s no problem, then why pass the law in the first place?,” Wallace again insisted.

“There can be a problem, because the liberal Democrats are the ones pushing for bathroom laws,” McCrory responded, which is illogical since he admitted there hasn’t been a problem.

“And now President Obama and one of my successors as mayor of Charlotte,” McCrory claimed, “wants government to have bathroom rules. I’m not interested in that. We did not start this on the right. Who started it was the political left. In Houston, Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina. And now, frankly, in Washington, D.C.”

Throughout the entire almost 11-minute interview, Gov. McCrory tried to frame himself as a victim bravely fighting big government, somehow suggesting he might be a national political figure. He also falsely tried to claim the Dept. of Justice’s letter to North Carolina applies in every state starting Monday.

“This is not just North Carolina,” McCrory claimed. “It’s the federal government being a bully,” he said.

“They are now telling every university that accepts federal funding that boys who may think they’re a girl can go into a girl’s locker room or restroom or shower facility. And that begins, I assume, tomorrow.”
