US Sec. of Education: ‘Bathroom Bills’ Like HB2 Are ‘Terrible Mistake,’ Should Be Repealed

‘They Are Hateful Laws and Should Be Repealed’

U.S. Secretary of Education John King on Monday called anti-transgender laws in North Carolina and Mississippi “hateful,” and called for their repeal. 

“My hope is legislators will realize they’ve made a terrible mistake,” Secretary King told journalists at the Education Writers Association national conference in Boston, the AP reports.

“They are hateful laws, and should be repealed,” King added, according to WRAL. He added that these laws send “a deeply problematic message to young people in schools and should be changed.”

Billions of dollars in Title IX funding could be at stake, but Sec. King on Monday did not warn of any impending action.

A federal lawsuit was filed at the end of March over North Carolina’s HB2. 

Last month the United States Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) condemned the North Carolina anti-LGBT law, along with Mississippi‘s “religious freedom” law HB 1523, and other, similar legislation, warning of “a larger, alarming trend to limit the civil rights of a class of people using religious beliefs as the excuse.”
