‘Obama Was a Gay Prostitute’ Candidate Invokes Hitler to Defend Her Fear-Mongering
Favored to Win, Texas Republican Mary Lou Bruner Compares U.S. to Germany Before Rise of Nazi Party
Mary Lou Bruner, the Texas Republican who believes President Barack Obama once worked as a gay prostitute to support a drug habit, is now invoking Hitler in response to allegations of fear-mongering from her opponent.Â
Bruner faces Kevin Ellis in a May 24 runoff in the GOP primary for the District 9 seat on the State Board of Education. Ellis is accusing Bruner of fear-mongering for suggesting, among other things, that children who say that abortion is wrong or that global warming is real during school risk being taken away from their parents by Child Protective Services.Â
In response to Ellis’ allegation, Bruner told The Texas Tribune there’s plenty of reason to be afraid of “elites in the federal government that are trying to give us a one-size-fits-all, top-down education system.”
“If that is fearmongering, I wish people had spoken out harder and heavier in Germany before Hitler took over,†Bruner said. “We should be scared when they want to take away from us what our government was built upon and totally revamp it and make it like the socialist and communist countries of the world.â€
It’s not the first time Bruner has drawn such a comparison. Last year, she shared a photo of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German pastor executed for his opposition to Hitler and the Nazis, on Facebook. Â
“If you try to stop federal control of education you might be criticized or you might make mistakes, but at least you can say you did not stand by and watch the terrible thing happen without saying or doing anything to stop the advance of socialism/Communism,†Bruner wrote above the photo.Â
Bruner is also under fire for several inaccurate statements during a recent forum where she was confronted by local school board presidents, as you can see in this video:Â
The Tribune reports that Bruner’s missteps during the forum have even led some tea party groups to reconsider their endorsements of her. But Mark Jones, a political scientist at Rice University, said he doesn’t expect Bruner’s incendiary comments  to hurt her among voters in the ultraconservative district, where she’s favored to win the runoff after outpacing Ellis by 17 points on March 1.Â
Jones said voters in the district are “going to focus on the bigger picture of going back to basics — having schools that reflect their values and looking to keep Common Core out of Texas.”Â
“Perhaps they wouldn’t say that Obama was a former prostitute financing his drug habit, but they do not have a favorable opinion of President Obama and therefore aren’t going to be turned off by that statement,” Jones said.Â
In addition to her claim that Obama once worked as a gay prostitute, Bruner recently alleged that pre-K programs are part of a federal plot to make children gay:Â

Bruner has also previously asserted that the Democratic Party was responsible for the assassination of Democratic President John F. Kennedy, that the U.S. should ban Islam and halt all Muslim immigration, and that evolution is a “religious philosophy” supporting atheism. Â
John Oliver recently profiled Bruner:
