Samantha Bee to Bernie Sanders and Supporters: ‘Nobody Stole the Nevada Election’

‘Full Frontal’ Goes All in on Bernie Sanders

On Monday night’s episode of Full Frontal, Samantha Bee took aim at troubling behavior displayed recently by some Bernie Sanders supporters. “Last week in Nevada the endless Thanksgiving dinner that is the Democratic Primary devolved into chaos and recrimination, with one side crying shenanigans, and the other crying please stop calling my cellphone and threatening my family,” said Bee, pointing to the recent clash between Sanders and Clinton supporters at the Nevada State Democratic Convention.

Citing what they believe were unfair attempts by party officials to shut them out of the delegate selection process, enraged Sanders supporters protested during and after the convention proceedings, with some resorting to more extreme measures to voice their dissatisfaction. Bee played voicemails left for Nevada Democratic Chairwoman Roberta Lange by Sanders supporters, some involving threats of violence.

“People like you should be hung in a public execution to show this world that we won’t stand for this sort of corruption,” said one Sanders voter. Another caller to Chairwoman Lange implied that violence might break out at the National Democratic Convention, suggesting that she had “probably just guaranteed fires in Philadelphia.”

Bee also hit Sanders on his response to the controversy. After initially remaining silent on the matter, Sanders eventually issued a statement in which he condemned “any and all forms of violence, including the personal harassment of individuals.” Sanders added, “it is imperative that all state parties treat our campaign supporters with fairness and the respect that they have earned.”

Bee remained unconvinced. “No,” she said, dismissing his explanation. “‘I’m sorry I hurt you but you shouldn’t have made me so mad’ is not an acceptable reaction here, unless you’re running for bad-boyfriend-in-chief.”

The same day that the Sanders campaign released the Senator’s statement, Sanders Campaign Manager Jeff Weaver told CNN, “There was a horrendous breakdown, where the leadership there in Nevada hijacked the process on the floor, created a tremendous amount of angst among people who were there attending the convention, who were supporters of Sen. Sanders, by ignoring the regular procedure and ramming through what they wanted to do.”

Politifact investigated Weaver’s claims, and determined that they were unfounded.

“Nobody stole the Nevada election,” Bee concludes. “Sanders just got beat.”
