Republican Prayed Gays Are ‘Worthy of Death’ Before Vote on Bill With LGBT Protections Amendment

GOP Congressman Led Weekly Meeting Quoting Anti-Gay Bible Passages – No Apologies From Any Republican

U.S. Congressman Rick Allen (R-GA) early Thursday morning opened the House Republican’s weekly meeting with a “prayer” containing Christian Bible verses that condemn LGBT people and state they are “worthy of death.” According to multiple reports, Rep. Allen also told his fellow Republicans the had sinned for having voted the night before on a amendment that would protect LGBT workers from being fired for being LGBT. Allen also told them they are “going to hell” for supporting equality protections. Later that morning a vital spending bill containing the LGBT protections amendment failed.

NCRM and others reported on Rep. Allen’s comments Thursday, but now his office has stated which sections of the Bible Allen prayed from.

“Georgia Rep. Rick W. Allen led the opening prayer by reading from Romans 1:18-32, and Revelations 22:18-19,” Roll Call reports.

Those passages condemn homosexuality and say that gays are “worthy of death.” Although a few Republicans who had voted for the LGBT protections the night before walked out, the majority did not.

“And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet,” reads Romans 1:27, which Allen read, according to his office.

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them,” read lines 28-32, which Allen also recited, according to his office.

The amendment, which codifies into law the executive orders President Barack Obama signed banning discrimination by federal contractors against LGBT workers, was sponsored by New York Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who is gay.

“To suggest that protecting people from being fired because of who they are means eternal damnation, then I think they are starting to show their true colors,” Rep. Maloney said. “I think we are living in a new world of Donald Trump and a Republican Party that is driving itself further and further away from common sense and further toward a radical approach to government.”

Late Thursday morning, after the vote on the spending bill with the LGBT protections amendment failed, Speaker Paul Ryan lied about why Democrats had voted against it.

Not a single Republican, including Rep. Allen, has apologized.
