North Carolina Democrats File Nondiscrimination Bill to Counter HB2
But Will It Get Support From Republican Leadership?
Democrats in the North Carolina General Assembly today introduced House Bill 1078, the Equality for All Act, that would repeal and replace Gov. Pat McCrory’s illegal and unconstitutional HB2.
The bill would ban discrimination against “a person’s race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, sex, marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity, military or veteran status, or genetic information.”Â
The new ordinance, were it to pass and be signed into law, would provide protected class status in areas including housing, employment, public accommodations, insurance, education, and would establish a Human Relations Commission.
Primary sponsors of the bill are State Reps. Sgro, Harrison, Fisher, and Alexander.
Of course, North Carolina Republicans control both chambers of the General Assembly and the Governor’s Office, so the bill’s chances under current leadership are slim. Recently, top GOP lawmakers were caught assigning pro-LGBT bills to committees that will not hold hearings on them. One committee hasn’t met in three years.
