In the Other Kentucky Primary, Democrats Choose Local Mayor to Run Against Rand Paul. And He’s Gay.

Can Democrats Win Against Rand Paul and Take Back the US Senate?

Republican Sen. Rand Paul was a terrible presidential candidate. Despite access to his father’s massive political machine, he never garnered more than single digits in the polls. He had to pay the Kentucky Republican party and perform questionable acts to even run for both president and re-election to the U.S. Senate, which, after dropping out of the race for the White House, he’s doing now. But having spent so much time ignoring his home state, Kentucky voters aren’t too pleased with him.

Meanwhile, in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, Kentucky voters last night chose the very popular mayor of Lexington, a former CEO of a construction company who’s adept at attracting jobs and business, and whose family has deep Kentucky roots. He’s well-liked, focused on helping people, and he happens to be gay.

Will Kentucky choose Democratic Mayor Jim Gray over Republican Senator Rand Paul?

If it does, it can also help Democrats take back the Senate.

Can Jim Gray beat Rand Paul?

“What I found in Lexington is that people care about performance,” Gray said. “They care about character and they care about competence. And that, at the end of the day, is what I think this election will be about.”
