Head of Christian Group Warns Same-Sex Marriage Just Like ‘Unthinkable’ Atrocities of Nazi Germany

Australian Christian Lobby Leader Also Lashes Out at Anti-Bullying Programs in Schools

The head of an influential anti-gay Christian group in Australia has just equated same-sex marriage and a safe schools anti-bullying program to the atrocities of Hitler’s Nazi Germany. Australia is currently embroiled in a national battle to extend marriage to same-sex couples, something a strong majority of citizens there support.

But as in America and around the world, anti-gay activists under the cloak of Christianity are working to thwart same-sex marriage. Falsely seeing their mission as one Jesus would support, they are using increasingly offensive tactics to try to defeat equality.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the “Australian Christian Lobby has compared same-sex marriage and the Safe Schools program to the Holocaust, dubbing them all ‘unthinkable things’ that happened because societies lacked strong moral guardians.”

In a blog post, Australian Christian Lobby head Lyle Shelton noted he had been reading an obituary of Fritz Stern, a academic who studied Hitler’s rise to power, and saw a “parallel” to the growing support for same-sex marriage.

“Hitler’s rise, he (Stern) argued, owed less to the Austrian corporal’s personality, his thuggish supporters and brutish ideas, than to his opponents’ cowardice and the weakness of Germany’s ‘gatekeepers’ – the guardians of its cultural and moral standards,” Shelton quoted from the obituary.

“The cowardice and weakness of Australia’s ‘gatekeepers’ is causing unthinkable things to happen, just as unthinkable things happened in Germany in the 1930s,” Shelton then wrote. “Perhaps we have moved beyond cowardice to complicity.”

Commenters on Shelton’s post were quick to push back. One said, “you just compared gay people to Nazis,” and “there is no love in your politics, only hate, isolation and exclusion.”

Another asked, “How dare you even use Nazis and gay people in the same sentence. Remember the pink triangle?”

And another reminded Shelton, “Hitler and his Nazis had a great hatered [sic] for homosexual people, they treated them as sub humans, they denied them basic human rights,” he wrote, noting Hitler murdered “many hundreds of thousands of them.”
