NFL Warned Georgia It Could Lose Multi-Million Dollar Event if Anti-Gay ‘Religious Liberty’ Bill Became Law

Capitalism has triumphed. The NFL has just announced it is awarding the 2019 Super Bowl to Atlanta. The event is worth hundreds of millions of dollars to state and local businesses, but just two months ago Georgia almost lost the prize. A devastating anti-gay “religious freedom” bill so sweeping it was called one of the worst in recent memory drew the ire of the NFL.

The governing body of major league football in a statement made clear state and local policies that violate the NFL’s policies of “tolerance and inclusiveness” would be “one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.”

The message was clear.

Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, who will not run for re-election, in a wisely worded statement vetoed the anti-gay bill.

“It’s time to take another deep breath. I see what’s happening in North Carolina. I see what’s happening in Mississippi,” Deal said. “And I would hope that many of the ones that are pushing for it would not want the state of Georgia to go through that kind of scenario.”

And he told lawmakers if they try to send him another he’ll veto that as well.
