Grammy Award Winners Say It’s a Moral Issue
Maroon 5 has just announced they are canceling their upcoming shows in North Carolina, citing the anti-LGBT law HB2. The Multi platinum and Grammy Award winning group was scheduled to play in Charlotte and Raleigh in September.
“We have announced that we will be canceling our upcoming shows in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina because of the recent passage of the HB2 legislation,” the group said on their website. “This was a difficult decision for us to make as a band. We don’t want to penalize our fans in North Carolina by not performing for them, but in the end it comes down to what we feel is morally right AS WE FEEL EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED EQUALLY.”
HB2 bans transgender people from using the restroom the corresponds with their gender identity, and strips control from local government over issues like minimum wage and nondiscrimination ordinances. Studies show it is costing the state billions of dollars, and will continue to do so each year until it is repealed or struck down by the courts.
Many other performers have canceled shows in the Tar Heel State. Among them, Boston, Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Cirque du Soleil, and Ani DiFranco, and others.
