Breaking: GOP House Speaker Says North Carolina Has No Intention of Meeting DOJ’s HB2 Deadline

‘We’re Not Going to Get Bullied by the Obama Administration’ Says Rep. Tim Moore

Republican Speaker of the House Tim Moore says North Carolina not only will not meet the deadline mandated by the Justice Department, it has no intention of even trying. Wednesday afternoon the DOJ notified the Gov. Pat McCrory that their anti-LGBT law HB2 is illegal. The State of North Carolina was given five days to respond to the DOJ’s letters, explaining that and how they would cease enforcing the law that many legal experts say is unconstitutional.

“We will take no action by Monday,” Moore told reporters Thursday, as reported by Colin Campbell of the News & Observer. “That deadline will come and go. We don’t ever want to lose any money, but we’re not going to get bullied by the Obama administration to take action prior to Monday’s date. That’s not how this works.”

“Right now we’re talking with our attorneys to see what our options are,” Moore added. “We’re going to move at the speed that we’re going to move at to look at what our options are.”

All the State needs to do is stop enforcing HB2 to satisfy the demands of the Department of Justice, but apparently that’s not going to happen. The result could be billions in lost federal funding, mostly for schools.

“HB2 became law in less than 12 hours,” Democratic State Rep. Cecil Brockman said. “Five days should be more than enough time to decide how to clean up after it.”
