Instead of a Tip North Carolina Server Gets Anti-Gay Bible Quote Calling for Her Death

Tensions High Over Anti-LGBT Law HB2

A Charlotte, North Carolina server says a customer left her a bible verse instead of a tip. Alexandra Judd posted the above photo to her Facebook page. The image shows the words “Lev 20:13,” short for Leviticus 20:13. In the King James version of the Christian holy bible, that verse calls for gay people or anyone who has sex with someone of the same gender to be killed.

“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”

Tensions have been high since Gov. Pat McCrory signed HB2, an anti-LGBT law.

“I never expected a hateful gesture like this,” Judd told WBTV, which says she is gay. “I’ve had a guest leave me a pamphlet to their church as a tip one time, but I didn’t feel as if they were being hateful towards me.”

Judd opposes HB2, and has attended protest rallies.

“I’ve heard of people leaving fake money, or writing funny stuff in the tip spot of a check but never believed it would happen to me, in the way that it did,” she said.

She says the customer was one of two women dining together, and they both “were very rude, and would hardly talk to me – but I never expected this,” she says. Also on the receipt was a comment: “praying for you!”

On her Facebook page, Judd posted a photo of the receipt, having scratched out any information that could be used to identify the anti-gay customer.

“I don’t care what anyone says, this is the most disrespectful thing you can do,” she wrote. “Don’t pray for me darling, I have everything I could possibly want and need in my life.”
