CEO of $63 Billion Pepsi Writes Letter to NC Gov. Pat McCrory Asking For Repeal of Anti-LGBT Law HB2
Pepsi Founded in North Carolina More Than a Century Ago
PepsiCo – better known as Pepsi – has deep roots in North Carolina. The $63 billion multi-national conglomerate, an S&P 500 component, was founded in New Bern, North Carolina nearly 120 years ago. On Friday its Chairman and CEO, Indra Nooyi, wrote a letter to Gov. Pat McCrory, urging him to work to repeal his anti-LGBT law, HB2.
Nooyi, who had the letter hand delivered, reminded the governor that PepsiCo still holds its annual shareholder meetings in New Bern, and noted the company’s “strong bond” with and “proud history” in the Tar Heel State.
“I was taken aback by the legislature’s recent action in passing HB2, as well as your decision to sign it into law so quickly,†Nooyi wrote, calling HB2 “completely inconsistent with the way we treat members of the PepsiCo family; is at odds with our company’s historic experience in North Carolina; and is contrary to our values as a company.â€

McCrory’s anti-LGBT law “impedes our progress toward equality,†she wrote.
“I hope you’ll consider calling for its repeal in the next legislative session,” which begins later this month, she concluded.
Nooyi also posted the letter to Twitter:
Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, no matter where they live. My open letter on #HB2. pic.twitter.com/gsPhOeWT4S

PepsiCo is also the parent company of several other worldwide brands including Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Quaker Oats, Tropicana, Cap’n Crunch Cereal, Aunt Jemima, Sabra, Rice-A-Roni, Cheetos, Doritos, Ruffles, Lay’s, Cracker Jack, and Lipton, among others.
The company is far from the only one to petition Gov. McCrory to repeal the law. Hundreds of other companies, corporations, and notables have called for its repeal. Several states and major cities have banned taxpayer funded travel to the state as well.
