UPDATING: ESPN Fires Curt Schilling Over Anti-Trans Posts

Former Baseball Great Sacked for Extremely Offensive Social Media Meme and Comments

ESPN has fired Curt Schilling. The former Major League Baseball pitcher who became an analyst for the sports media giant had shared on Facebook an immensely offensive and transphobic meme, adding insensitive comments to it. He then defended those comments, and ones made six months ago comparing Muslim extremists to Nazis, in a post on his official blog.

On his blog wrote that “this latest brew ha ha is beyond hilarious.”

“ESPN is an inclusive company,” the network posted on its website minutes ago. “Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated.”

That is the extent of the statement.

Outsports had first reported the news of Schiller’s social media posts, and posted the image to Twitter:

UPDATE I: 8:25 PM EDT –

Outsports’ Cyd Zeigler weighs in, saying he “couldn’t be happier.”

Schilling’s offense was not having a political opinion, it was expressing himself with a Facebook share and a comment that was demeaning to an entire class of people under attack in our culture today. He could have offered a thoughtful perspective and, like his family has suggested, admitted a lack of understanding of issues. Instead, he used a disgusting display, followed up by blaming everyone who was offended and refusing to back down.

While people are throwing “The First Amendment” as a defense for Schilling’s actions, the First Amendment protects speakers from only the government.
