Donald Trump Has Received Nearly $2 Billion Worth of Media Coverage – for Free
America’s Obsession With the Trump Travesty Is a Self-Fulfilling Prophesy
The New York Times reports that the media has lavished nearly $2 billion worth of free “adversing” on Donald Trump since he announced his presidential campaign run.
“Over the course of the campaign, he has earned close to $2 billion worth of media attention, about twice the all-in price of the most expensive presidential campaigns in history. It is also twice the estimated $746 million that Hillary Clinton, the next best at earning media, took in. Senator Bernie Sanders has earned more media than any of the Republicans except Mr. Trump,” the Times reports.
Trump’s free coverage earned him “$400 million worth of free media last month, about what John McCain spent on his entire 2008 presidential campaign.”

Donald Trump is news, but not every word Trump utters deserves to make headlines.Â
The worst offenders are the cable networks (like MSNBC) who insist on airing his rallies and speeches live, as “Breaking News,” when it’s not breaking news, it’s the same stump speech he’s been giving for weeks or even months.Â
Unfortunately, the Times didn’t rank the worst offenders.
Some responses via Twitter:
Trump can’t pass gas w/out “BREAKING NEWS” AND 3 hours of media coverage and they wonder why he’s popular

True: Trump gets tons of free media. Also true: There’s no easy way to distinguish between legit coverage and fawning attention.
