Cruz Warns Trump: ‘Donald, You’re a Sniveling Coward. Leave Heidi the Hell Alone.’
Texas Tea Party GOP Presidential Candidate Tries to Divert Attention From His Call for an Anti-Muslim Police State
Ted Cruz is angry – or he says he is. After Donald Trump tweeted an ugly, juvenile threat against the Texas Tea Party Senator’s wife, Heidi, Cruz responded quickly. But that was Tuesday, almost a full 48 hours ago, yet Cruz is still milking whatever sympathy he thinks he can get from it.
(To be clear, an attack like Trump’s on any candidate’s family member is inappropriate. Trump’s was especially, to quote Cruz, “classless.”)
Meanwhile, also on Tuesday, while Trump was calling for changing laws to allow the U.S. to waterboard terrorism suspects, Cruz had devolved into calling for an anti-Muslim police state.Â
“We need to empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized,†Cruz – who boasts that he is an accomplished attorney who won at the Supreme Court – insisted. That call, of course, displayed his ignorance of the Muslim community and U.S. law, stoked fear, prioritized hate, and would have created what some are calling a “police state.”
Cruz, is under attack for that outrageous call, so Thursday he stood before the cameras and launched yet another counter attack against Trump – undoubtedly deserved, but clearly an attempt to take the heat off himself.
“Our spouses and our children are off bounds,†Cruz said. “It is not acceptable for a big, loud New York bully to attack my wife. It is not acceptable for him to make insults, to send nasty tweets — and I don’t know what he does late at night, but he tends to do these at about 11:30 at night, I assume when his fear is at the highest point.â€
“It’s not easy to tick me off,†Cruz continued. “I don’t get angry often. But you mess with my wife, you mess with my kids, that’ll do it every time. Donald, you’re a sniveling coward. Leave Heidi the hell alone.â€
Dave Weigel at The Washington Post, who reported on Cruz’s latest attack today, notes that “Cruz’s daughters, in fact, have been the rare human beings immune from Trump’s insults.”
