Reagan Appointed SCOTUS Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Says Obama Should Choose Scalia Replacement

‘I Don’t Agree’ With GOP. ‘Let’s Get On With It’ Retired Justice Says.

President Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor to the Supreme Court in 1981, where she served until her retirement in 2006. A conservative, she was unanimously confirmed by the Senate.

Justice O’Connor weighed in on the GOP-created controversy surrounding who should choose the successor to the late Justice Antonin Scalia in an interview with Phoenix, Arizona’s Fox 10.

“I think we need somebody there now to do the job, and let’s get on with it,” O’Connor said. She made clear she thinks President Barack Obama should choose the next justice. “I don’t agree,” with conservatives who claim the next president should be allowed to make that vital decision.

“You just have to pick the best person you can under the circumstances under the appointing authority,” O’Connor said. “You must do – and it’s an important position, and one that we should care about as a nation and as a people.”
