Convicted Philly Hate Attacker Would Like To Do A Public Service Announcement Instead Of Jail Time

Kathryn Knott’s Attorney Says She Would Like to ‘Heal Some Wounds’

Kathryn Knott was the only one of three people charged who refused a generous plea deal in the violent Sept. 11, 2015 hate attack on a Philadelphia same-sex couple. The daughter of a police chief, Knott was convicted of simple assault and other crimes, after leaving on of her two victims for dead. She was given a sentence of up to 10 months in jail, but now she would like to offer the court something different.

Knott’s attorney says she should not “be punished for exercising her constitutional right to a trial,” since the other two charged in the attack that left one man’s jaw wired shut for months were given sentences of probation and community service.

She’d like the same deal, the one she was offered but refused, and would like to record a public service announcement “where she could take the infamy of the arrest and maybe heal some wounds,” her new attorney, William Brennan says. 

Brennan’s reasoning, according to Philly.com, is that Knott will be out of jail “in a few months either way,” and would like to turn her punishment “into something positive.” 

The AP adds Knott’s proposed PSA would explain “what she has learned about tolerance over the last year.”
